Hindu Wedding Ceremony

Vivah Sanskar

લગ્ન વિધિविवाह संस्कार

A complete Vedic wedding, with every ritual explained so both families and all guests can follow.

Duration About 1½–3 hours

Panditji explains this puja
What it is

Vivah is one of the sixteen samskaras, the sacred rites of passage in Hindu life. Two people, and two families, are joined before Agni, the sacred fire, which stands as the divine witness to the vows.

When families do it

On a wedding muhurat chosen from the Hindu calendar (panchang), ideally after looking at both partners' birth details.

What happens
  1. Ganesh puja so the day begins without obstacles
  2. Var Puja and Madhuparka: the groom is welcomed at the mandap
  3. Kanyadaan and Hastamilap: the bride's parents place her hand in the groom's
  4. Mangal Phera: the couple circle the sacred fire
  5. Saptapadi: seven steps, each a promise for the life ahead
  6. Sindoor and mangalsutra, then blessings from elders

Many guests at Florida weddings are attending a Hindu ceremony for the first time. I explain each step in English as it happens, and in Gujarati or Hindi for the elders, so nobody is just watching. Shorter formats are possible for venues with a tight schedule.

Booking

How booking a puja works

  1. Send an inquiry

Use the form below, call or text, or email. Tell me the puja, your possible dates and the city.

  2. Muhurat and samagri

I suggest auspicious times from the panchang and send a complete samagri list, with the dakshina, before you confirm.

  3. The puja, explained

On the day I set up, perform the puja in Sanskrit, and explain each step in English, Gujarati or Hindi.

  4. Prasad and blessings

We close with aarti and prasad. You get notes on anything to do in the days after.

Panditji explains

The meaning behind the rituals

A puja means more when you know why each thing is done. These are questions families ask me most often.

Open scripture on a wooden stand with a rudraksha mala, tulsi leaves and a small diya
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वःUnderstanding is part of the offering.

Why every puja begins with Ganesh

Ganesh is Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. He is also the lord of beginnings, so we greet him first. It is like knocking before you enter a home: we ask permission, and ask that the work go smoothly.

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

What the sankalp is

The sankalp is the statement of intention at the start of a puja. The priest names the time, place, your family lineage (gotra), your name and the reason for the puja. That is why I ask for these details before the day: it makes the puja yours.

The kalash: the universe in a pot

A kalash filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, represents creation itself. The water is life, the leaves are growth, and the coconut is the divine. Nearly every puja places a kalash first, because the deities are invited to sit within it.

Why the Saptapadi has seven steps

In the seven steps around the fire, the couple promise nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, children, long life together and lifelong friendship. After the seventh step, the couple are considered married. The promises are spoken, not just walked.

Prasad is not just a sweet

Food offered to God returns to us as prasad, a blessing we can taste. That is why prasad is received with the right hand and never refused. Sheero at Satyanarayan, modak for Ganesh and kheer for Lakshmi each have their own story.

The Gayatri Mantra

The Gayatri, from the Rig Veda, is a prayer for clear understanding: may the light of the divine inspire our minds. It is the first mantra given at the sacred thread ceremony and one of the best to learn at any age.

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah

About

About Pandit Jinit Bhatt

Jinit Bhatt is a Hindu priest (pujari) living in Fort Myers, Florida. He performs pujas, samskaras and havans in the Vedic tradition for families throughout Southwest Florida, and online for families anywhere.

He speaks English, Gujarati and Hindi. The mantras stay in Sanskrit, as they should. The explanation is in whichever language your family is most comfortable with, and often in all three at once when grandparents, parents and children are in the same room.

For Panditji, every puja is a chance to teach. Many families in Florida know the rituals from childhood but were never told the reasons. He takes the time to explain why the kalash is placed first, what the sankalp says, and what each of the seven steps of the Saptapadi promises, so children and guests leave knowing what they took part in.

He serves Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Lehigh Acres and the surrounding communities, and travels across Florida for weddings and larger ceremonies.
