What it is

Namkaran is the samskara in which the child is formally given a name. In many families the name begins with a syllable taken from the baby's nakshatra (birth star) at the time of birth.

When families do it

Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, but it can be done any auspicious day after that.

What happens

  1. Ganesh puja and blessing of the baby
  2. Finding the name syllable from the time and place of birth
  3. The father or elder whispers the name into the baby's right ear
  4. The name is announced and written, often on rice or a slate

Send me the date, time and place of birth and I will give you the syllables ahead of time, so you have days to choose.
