What it is

After a death, the rites of the 10th to 13th days, including Barmu and Teramu, help the departed soul join the ancestors (pitrus). Shraddh and tarpan each year remember them with gratitude.

When families do it

On the days after death, on the yearly tithi (Varsi) and during Pitru Paksha.

What happens

  1. Pind daan and tarpan
  2. Puja and prayers for the departed
  3. Feeding and charity in their name
  4. Closing prayers for the family

Every family's custom differs. I follow yours, and help when nobody in the family remembers the details.
