What it is

Satyanarayan means Vishnu as the embodiment of truth. The katha, from the Skanda Purana, tells five stories of people whose lives changed when they kept, or forgot, their promise to God.

When families do it

On Purnima (full moon), and to give thanks after a new home, job, marriage, birth or recovery.

What happens

  1. Ganesh puja, Navagraha puja and kalash sthapana
  2. Puja of Satyanarayan with tulsi and panchamrut
  3. Reading of the five chapters of the katha
  4. Aarti and sheero (sheera) prasad for everyone

I tell the katha in Gujarati, Hindi or English, or a mix, and stop to explain what each story is teaching. Children enjoy it when they understand it.
