What it is

Chaulakarma, called Babari in Gujarati families, is the first haircut. The birth hair is offered with mantras, symbolising a fresh start and good health for the child.

When families do it

Usually in the first or third year, by family tradition.

What happens

1. Ganesh puja and sankalp
2. Blessing the water and the blade
3. First locks cut with mantras, then the barber completes the haircut
4. Sandalwood or turmeric applied, and the hair offered respectfully
