What it is

Sagai is the families' public promise of the coming marriage. In Gujarati families it is called Gol Dhana, after the jaggery (gol) and coriander seeds (dhana) shared as the first sweet of the new relationship.

When families do it

Any auspicious day agreed by both families, often weeks or months before the wedding.

What happens

  1. Ganesh puja and sankalp with both families
  2. Tilak and gifts exchanged between the families
  3. Gol Dhana distributed as prasad
  4. Exchange of rings and blessings from elders

A good first ceremony for families who are meeting each other's traditions for the first time.
