Upanayana, when a young person receives the sacred thread and the Gayatri Mantra.

What it is

Upanayana means being brought near to the teacher. The child receives the yagnopavit (janoi), learns the Gayatri Mantra and begins the life of a student of the Vedas.

When families do it

Traditionally between ages 8 and 16, on a muhurat chosen for the child.

What happens

  1. Ganesh puja, matrika puja and Grah Shanti
  2. Head shaving or symbolic haircut, by family custom
  3. Receiving the janoi and the Gayatri Mantra from the guru
  4. Bhiksha: the child asks the mother and elders for alms
  5. Havan and blessings

I sit with the child before the day to practise the Gayatri Mantra and explain what the thread means, so the ceremony is something they understand, not just something done to them.
